est_egk4Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1907, Ema Gordon Klabin was the second of Hessel and Fanny Gordon Klabin's three daughters. Both of them were Lithuanian immigrants who came to Brazil in the last decade of the 19th century.Her father, naturalized Brazilian in 1923, was an entrepreneur that gained distinction in the paper and cellulose industry development in the country. She was educated in Brazil, as well as in Europe (Germany and Switzerland), where she resided during the first world war. Besides her activity as a businesswoman, a duty she took over in 1946 after her father's death, Ema dedicated herself to a great number of philanthropic and humanitarian activities. Among those, her important role in the building of the Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital, in São Paulo.

The Foundation

Officially registered in 1978, the Ema Klabin Cultural Foundation is a not-for-profit institution, declared as a federal public resource, aimed at promotion and dissemination of cultural, artistic and scientific activities, and the transformation of Ema Gordon Klabin's residence into a museum open to public visitation.The work of cataloging and researching the collection began in 1997, three years after Ema Klabin's death, and allowed a deeper understanding of the pieces and their history. In spite of remaining closed to public visitation, the Cultural Foundation Ema Gordon Klabin has welcome many visitors who work in the field, as well as researchers from Brazil and abroad.In order to divulge its collection, the Foundation has also lent many pieces to a wide number of exhibitions in Brazil and in Europe.
